There have been so many times when I’ve sent an email only to realise immediately that I’ve forgotten to include something important or sent it to the wrong person. I recently read that Gmail has introduced a new feature called ‘Undo Send’, which lets you retrieve an email a few seconds after you’ve dispatched it.
My friend told me this feature has been part of Gmafl for years. Previously, it had been an element in Google Labs. The Gmail section of Google Labs lets users test prototype email features and provide feedback. The new ‘Undo Send’ feature is now out of this experimental phase. But it’s not enabled by default and has to be activated within Gmal’s settings.
Activate Gmail's new ‘Undo Send’ option
To do that, click the gear (cog) icon at the top right, then Settings. Now scroll down to see the new Undo Send option. Tick Enable Undo Send (see screenshot above). You now need to set ‘a cancellation period’ (the time you have to retrieve your email after it’s sent). The options are 5, 10, 20 or 30 seconds. Select what you want, scroll to the bottom, then click Save Changes.
Now try sending an email. Whereas previously, you only saw a ‘View message’s link, you’ll now also see an Undo link, which will remain on your screen for the ‘cancellation period’. Clicking the link will retrieve your email. You can then make the necessary changes and re-send it.
