Since Firmware update 2.50, PlayStation 4 allows you to back up your data on an external hard disk. For this, open the "System Settings” and select "System” and then "Backup and Restore”. Now plug in your USB hard disk and select "Backup PS4”. Note that the trophies won are not backed up and hence why you must run the synchronisation beforehand. The next screen shows how large the backup will be. You can exclude the installation data of games.

Back up data of the gaming console on an external hard disk
Since the last Firmware update, Playstation4
allows backing up of data on the external hard disk

However, in this case, you must fully download the games again if you want to playback your backup. The data backup will take some time to complete. If you wish to use your backup later then select the option "Restore PS4” in the same menu. If your USB device is connected, then the PS4 will automatically detect the backup and will be able to reinstall everything.
